A Place to Breathe is a gathering of BIPOC creatives that meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 6pm-8pm at 205 Ocean Avenue. Join 205 Ocean Ave Studios director and artist, Rosalba Breazeale to take a couple hours to breathe, relax and be in community.

Summer gatherings will be held outside in the backyard when weather permits. Light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.

No prompt for August, but feel free to bring something you would like to work on while chatting with a love group of BIPOC creatives or just come as you are.

205 Ocean Ave is providing a space for healing for BIPOC and blended families on Sunday, July 19th beginning at 9am. This gathering is in response to the murder of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero following Nolan Wells and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and the longstanding history of government-sanctioned violence against Black and Brown people in this country. Join Tender Table organizer and artist, Verónica Pérez, and 205 Ocean Ave Studios director and artist, Rosalba Breazeale to take a couple hours to grieve, process and be in community.

Art supplies for making signs will be available. These include cyanotype printing materials, a limited supply of pencils, markers, watercolor in a variety of colors and watercolor paper. Feel free to bring additional art and craft supplies if you feel so inclined. Participation in sign-making is not required to attend.

Coffee, seltzer water and light snacks will be provided.

About the symbol:

Abya Yala is the Kuna (Guna) word for land in full maturity/land that flourishes/living land. The Guna are Indigenous to the lands currently known as Columbia ranging through Panama. This term has been adopted by some Indigenous peoples of South America to refer to so-called North, Central and South America although theses lands have many names pre-dating European colonization. Somos Abya Yala (We Are Abya Yala) sits inside a Chakana, which is an Andean symbol representing our cosmology (learn more here). Last, but not least, the South-up map is inspired by 1943 pen an ink drawing by Joaquín Torres García entitled, América Invertida, which challenges US Imperialism and North-South bias. These elements were brought together as a symbol of resistance by Rosalba Breazeale in 2020.

In collaboration with Wild Seed Project, Rosalba Breazeale will be hosting an art workshop featuring lumen and chemigram photographic processes.

During this workshop, participants will create chemigrams – object-based images on light sensitive paper - utilizing responsibly foraged plant material, pigments, dyes and plant-based developer. This experimental process allows for various forms of mark making or light painting to enter into each unique print. We will begin with a demonstration of various techniques for creating dynamic images after which each participant will create their own. No photographic experience necessary. Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy.

Supplies: All necessary supplies will be provided. However, participants may bring two-dimensional objects such as stencils, translucent fabric or glass objects. Small three-dimensional objects may also be used but will not render a sharp silhouetted image. The objects should fit on an 8in.x10in. piece of paper. Keep in mind we will be working with cyanotype solution, rust pigment and dyes, which could stain any objects (or clothes) they come in contact with.

Notes on access: The studio and backyard are wheelchair accessible.  The closest bus stop is on the number 2 line, at Forest & Walton.

As a prompt for our July gathering, bring your favorite fruit and share how you like to prepare it or just bring yourself and something you would like to work on while chatting with a love group of BIPOC creatives.

We will also have an Indigo vat going, so bring something made from natural fibers to dip. Yarn, fabric, clothing etc.
